In Loving Memory
Lynn Stiff Fraker
12/1/1955 - 7/11/2010

Lynn Suzanne Stiff was born December 1, 1955, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to James William and Jeneane Butterbrodt Stiff.  At the age of 54, Lynn Fraker died from injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Mexico, Missouri, on Sunday, July 11, 2010.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 16, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home, 1212 1st Ave., Vinton.  Visitation will also be held from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 17, at Fry Funeral Home, 220 E. 6th St., Tipton.  Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 17, at Fry Funeral Home in Tipton with Rev. Norman Anderson officiating.  Following services, Lynn's body will be cremated.

Lynn was raised in the Tipton area and was a 1974 graduate of Tipton Community Schools.  She furthered her education with a diploma from Kirkwood Community College, a baccalaureate degree from the University of Iowa and a Master’s degree in education from Iowa State University.   Lynn began touching lives with her work in private dental practice and work at the VA Hospital in Iowa City.  She also volunteered her time and efforts on the Virginia Gay Hospital Board in Vinton.

Lynn returned to first alma mater, Kirkwood Community College, in 1981.  For nearly 30 years she was proud to serve Kirkwood as a Dental Assisting instructor, Director of the Benton County Centers and Director of the Career Academy programs.  Lynn’s dedication, energy and professionalism impressed and inspired those around her.  Her focused attention to detail and excellence was reflected in everything she did.

Lynn lived life to the fullest. She conquered any challenge she faced with grace and class.  She loved spending time with family, friends and close colleagues.  Full of energy, she enjoyed biking, walking, gardening and vacationing.  Lynn touched the lives of everyone she met.  Every room she entered was brightened with her smile.  We were blessed to have her in our lives and will miss her more deeply than can ever be expressed.

Lynn was preceded in death by her grandparents.  She is survived by one son, Daley Fraker; significant other Doug Hill; her parents, James William and Jeneane Stiff; grandmother Velma Butterbrodt; and one brother, Jim (Lori Sturdy) Stiff, all of Tipton; and two sisters, Dawn (Jerry) Marolf of Moscow and Karen (Jay) Ballenger of Tipton.

A memorial fund has been established.

I was so sorry to hear of Lynn's passing. Lynn helped me in so many ways it is hard to put into words. I returned to school at 30 as a single mother and Lynn not only helped me with that process she also became a great friend and mentor. When I was close to graduation she recommended me for a job to a business associate of hers. I have been at that job for 13 years now and over the years I still have heard from Lynn at different times, just another way she had of letting you know you were more than just a student to her. May your many memories help you through this difficult time...God bless you all

I'm so saddened to hear about Lynn. When Jeremy Beschen and I worked at Kirkwood a couple years ago, we worked with Lynn as part of the H.S. Academy and we would take road trips with her to various high schools. We especially enjoyed the trip to Washington, IA as we conveniently stopped by Riverside for lunch. I don't think neither Lynn nor I played, but Jeremy won! She's going to be greatly missed.

Lynn was one of the most thoughtful, caring persons I have known. When I was getting divorced and thinking about returning to the workforce, Lynn spent a whole afternoon with me to help me figure out where I wanted my new path to take me. I now have a great career and wouldn't have if Lynn would not have talked this then terrified adult into returning to school. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Lynn was an inspiration to me. My story is not unlike the many who crossed Lynn’s path. A non-traditional student with 3 kids at home and a husband on the road working, returning to school with Lynn’s encouraging words and support. She guided me and became my mentor. Her strong sense of self radiated outward and she showed her students that we had what it took to make a change in our lives. She helped me with contacts years after graduation, to persue owning my own company. Although, we had Lynn guiding us for such a short time here on earth, I am comforted in knowing that she is now our advocate with the Lord. We were blessed to know her and will be missed by so many.

Always fair and impartial, I could feel her smile on the other side of the phone. Recently I was in Europe with the Iowa Ambassadors of Music group with my husband, Dr. Carson. We had the pleasure of meeting Greg, Lynn's nephew. I had no idea until today that Greg's Aunt was Lynn. I felt bad for Greg while we were in Europe, he handled himself so beautifully, I don't know how he did it.
