Mary O. Anderson, 86, of Vinton, died peacefully at her home at Windsor Manor in Vinton on July 2, 2009, following a short illness.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 6, 2009, at Vinton Presbyterian Church with The Rev. Ron Sumption and Pastor Jim Blair officiating. Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 5, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton.
Mary was born July 13, 1922, in rural Vinton, the daughter of Charles J. and Bernice Wilford Garwood. She graduated from Vinton High School in 1940.
On August 28, 1943, Mary was united in marriage with Glenn Anderson in Cedar Rapids. The couple joined the Vinton Presbyterian Church in 1960 where Mary had been a member of the sewing circle and a Sunday school teacher.
She was a homemaker and, in the past, worked at Feller’s dime store and Hilda’s Flower Shop.
She was a member of the Modern Entertainers. She enjoyed flowers, baking and crocheting, and she loved spending time with her family.
Mary is survived by her husband of 65 years, Glenn Anderson of Vinton; one son, John (Barbara) Anderson of Vinton; one daughter, Janet (Richard) Williams of Vinton; one brother, Jack (Viroqua) Garwood of Vinton; two sisters-in-law, Dwyn Garwood of Vinton and Blanche Garwood of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren: Matthew (Rachel) Anderson, Melanie (Ryan) Davis, Maria (Tracy) Davis, Paul (Stephonie) Williams, all of Vinton, and Jim (Anna) Williams of Clarion; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Bert & Dale Garwood; one sister, Martha Jane Davis; and one brother-in-law, Glenn Davis.
A memorial fund has been established.
