   Mary Genevieve “Gen” Heisler, 92, of Van Horne, died Sunday, May 10, 2009, at Virginia Gay Nursing and Rehab in Vinton following an extended illness.
   Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Van Horne with Father David Ambrosy officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday at the church from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Van Horne.
   Gen was born December 9, 1916, in Van Horne, Iowa, the daughter of Conrad and Margaret Hickey Schallau. She graduated from high school in Van Horne, attended Mt. Mercy College for 1 year and graduated from Mercy School of Nursing.
   Gen was the head nurse at the VA Hospital in Minneapolis for 10 years. She was one of the first nurses hired at the VA Hospital in Iowa City and at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton. Gen was also employed by Dr. Dutton for 27 years.
   She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Van Horne.
   Gen is survived by two daughters: Ann (Bob) Pickering of North Liberty and Peggy Sams of Kansas City, MO; two grandchildren: Paul (Holly) Pickering and Amy (Mark) Owen; and 5 great-grandchildren: Abbey, Ryan and Benjamin Owen and Katie and Jake Dickinson.
   She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers: Edward, Leonard, Paul, Bernard, Daniel and Father Conrad Schallau; and two sisters: Marguerite Weber and Winifred Schallau.

Please accept my sympathies. Gen was such a wonderful woman and nurse. I was sick all the time as a kid and she was THE BEST! She also lived just two doors down from my grandma (Tessie Daniels) and I have fond memories of "Winnie & Gen."
